Roger Federer overcame a two sets-to-one deficit and defeated Mikhail Youzhny, 6-1, 6-7 (3), 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, on Thursday to the tune of fans cheering and sporadically chanting, “Let’s go, Roger, let’s go.”
Federer’s first-round match against Frances Tiafoe on Tuesday also went to five sets.
“These five set battles are actually quite a lot of fun and I feel quite warmed up by now,” Federer joked in his on-court interview.
This is the first time Federer has opened a Grand Slam tournament with two five-set matches.
Federer said that he got off to a slow start in his first-round match because he was playing cautiously. He was worried about how his back would hold up after skipping the Cincinnati Masters with a lower back injury. On Thursday, he said it was feeling “much better.”
The match lasted 3 hours 8 minutes, as both men struggled to gain control. Federer, who has been praised for improving his backhand, had seven backhand winners against 35 backhand errors in the match.
